Recently the government in Taiwan decided to extend English teaching to Elementary school. Reading is an essential part of literacy. However, it takes effort and particular didactical methods to teach reading effectively, If reading is inefficiently taught, then children become inefficient readers, struggling with word recognition and unable to understand the text. There are three distinct approaches to teaching reading: The Alphabet Approach; The Sight Word Approach and The Phonics Approach. Many teachers use a combination of these three approaches. Reading problems are among the most common causes of academic failure. The purpose of this paper is to outline some of the latest thinking on the teaching of reading and to present some methods for teaching reading to beginner readers and elementary school teachers.
