Due to the second transition of power in Taiwan which DPP regains the ruling power, official interactions between Taiwanese government and Chinese government have been frozen since 2016. Even the official relationships go down, the scholars have accumulated much experiences based on the cross-strait interaction in the past three decades. They focused on the research into the behaviors of Chinese exchange students in Taiwan, yet, the follow up study for these students remains in vain. Researchers of the current study deem these postgraduate students who have been interns in Taiwanese news media worth of exploration. It is especially significant when these communication and journalistic postgraduates’ attitude has been influenced by time and their environment in China, just as the title “Will the footprints in the sand show where one has been?” The current study aims to examine the Chinese exchange students who have been to Taiwan between 2007 and 2017 to discover the influence of the environment in changing their attitude. The current study views that the constrain posed by Xi administration in the freedom of speech can be a barrier for these students to freely express their thoughts about Taiwanese issues. Therefore, the expressions are valuable for academics. The theoretical framework incorporates involvement theory, theory of planned behavior, general self-efficacy, national image and familiarity to explore the attitude change of Chinese exchange students who major in journalism and communication in this process. Meanwhile, contact hypothesis and Bourdieu's insight of "field" are employed to examine the interactions between Chinese exchange students and Taiwanese students as well as teachers, and how these interactions influence Chinese students’attitude and recognition toward Taiwan. Last but not least, we attempt to examine whether the experience in Taiwan can be the beneficial capital for these Chinese students. A survey and in-depth interview will be employed as the research methods. This is a three-year longitudinal study which the first year conducting a quantitative survey, the second year conducting in-depth interviews in economic developed areas such as Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou, and the third year conducting in-depth interviews in western and northeastern areas of China in order to seek for the differences.
