Integrating social network theory, alliance literature and competitive dynamics research, this research explore how a firm’s structural position in a competitive network affects its structural position in a cooperative network and how this relationship is moderated by an important structural property of the competitive network. This research argue that a focal firm’s embeddedness in a competitive network in terms of its centrality and structural-hole position confers unique informational advantages and resource endowments, which in turn affects its prospective partners’ propensity to form alliance with the firm. This research connects both competitive dynamics and network theory viewpoints and consequently represents a new direction toward closing the gap between the existing micro and macro level of co-optition.
