The purpose of the present study is to investigate the relationship among job demand, leisure participation and well-being (including life stress and job satisfaction). Many past studies on leisure and stress focused on the buffering role of leisure, but the findings were inconsistent. Resources gained from leisure activities may help one to counter the negative effect of stressor. This study used survey technique with participants who were employees from various industries in Taiwan. A total of 247 copies of questionnaires have been distributed randomly, 220 respondents were counted as valid (valid response rate: 89.07%). By using path analysis, we found job demand was positively related to leisure participation. Moreover, leisure participation was negatively related to life stress and positively related to job satisfaction. This study examined and supported the counteractive model of stress copying from Ensel & Lin's (1991) theory. That is, when job demand is higher, individuals are more likely to participate in leisure activities, enhancing their physical and psychological resources, and further to eliminate their life stress and increase job satisfaction.
