Energy plays an important role in economic development. The economy depends heavily on energy due to technology development and advances in machinery and equipment, which in turn could result in energy depletion. Hence, energy consumption has become a global focus. Since numerous studies use the bi-variable model to study the nexus between energy consumption and economic growth in Taiwan, their findings could be biased because of the problem of omission of important variables. Therefore, the study extends the bi-variate model and includes the third variable - capital formation. Additionally, ARDL Bounds analysis for small sample and Toda and Yamamoto causality test are applied to re-examine the nexus between energy consumption and economic growth in Taiwan. Results show that a positive unidirectional causality runs from energy consumption to real gross domestic product. That is, energy consumption in Taiwan affects economic growth. |
