The banter stories in the modern version of ”Tan Sou” mainly recorded the anecdotes of scholar class in the Southern, Northern and Sui Dynasties. There were twenty nine banter stories in ”Tan Sou”, which accounted for about one-third of the total number. Those stories provided corresponding introduction on the culture trend and the thought of scholars at that time. The present study intended to explore how Yang Song-Jie's ”Tan Sou” used banter stories to reflect the prevailing trend in discussing issues about body features, taboos on names, region differences and so on. Consequently, the lifestyle and values of scholar class as well as the phenomenon and identification of that age that the author intended to propose can be realized. It also overthrew the traditional stereostype toward Confucius, monks and emperors and made them temporarily dispel their status in the process of debating and discussing. By doing so, it came closer to the audiences and reflected the humorous living style and life attitude of people at that time.
