What discussion topics do EFL students find interesting? Topics have long been used in language teaching as topics foster real communication: that is communication in which the learners have both a desire to say something and a purpose. Additionally, topics that arouse the interest of a learner are much more likely to motivate than topics that are considered boring. A survey was given to 243 students at Chinese Culture University in Taiwan and the students were asked to rate how interesting they found 104 topics. The top ten most interesting and boring topics were broken down by gender and it was found that there was a difference in what was considered interesting and boring. The results of this survey are useful for EFL teachers in order to empirically decide which topics are the most popular with students.
