Involuntary job loss is a result of the organizational strategy—organizational restructuring and downsizing. In the framework of qualitative research design, the research aimed to explore the career-deciding process of middle-aged males who got unemployed involuntarily and the relative influence factors. The data conducted in-depth interviews with one relevant male participant recruited through purposive sampling. That is, a midlife male who was willing to describe his life story openly and actively and fit the research needs was chosen to join the interview. The interview methodology utilized The Life-Story Interview, developed by McAdams (1997) which was modified and adapted to the specific purposes of this study based on the results of the researcher’s pilot study as well as feedbacks from the subject during the interview. Interview was transcribed and coded, using computer package Atlas5.0. Data analysis was using the「the holistic–content」.
The results show as follows:
1.The Intentions under the Career Decision process of Involuntary
Job loss adult males
(1) The stage of Employment and Layoff: emphasis on family life
rather than on the development of career; withdrawal from the
familiar job; work experiences before unemployment; the change
of mood following layoff.
(2) The stage of Longitudinal Unemployment: the life of goofing
around; the process of middle-male's job-seeking; lack of seed
money; break of entrepreneurial dream; strong economic stress;
wearing-through-the-day attitudes; expectations on reemployment;
supports and encouragements from friends; continuance of
traditional marital relationship; less strict upbringing;
confined social interaction.
(3) The stage of Reemployment: permanently pessimistic prospects.
2.The Determinant Factors under the Career Decision Process of
Involuntary Job loss adult males
(1)The Determinant Factors of Employment and Layoff: Accepting being
laid Off: The Attitude of Abiding by the Law and Behaving
Themselves, the Legal Procedure of Layoff, and Supports from
Other Laid off Colleagues.
(2)The Determinant Factors of Longitudinal Unemployment : A Three-
Month’s Rest : Inconvenient Transportation, Lower Wage. Doing a
temperary Job: Earning Allowances; Helping friend; Unable to find
a job; and the pressure of lack of money.
