The purpose of this study is to explore the linguistic features of Korean webtoons and based on the collected corpus data, examine the characteristics of Taiwanese webtoon translations, providing a reference for Korean-Chinese webtoon translations, particularly in cases where there are no definitive answers.
This study begins by examining the linguistic features of Korean webtoons, categorizing them into five major types: transformative endings, onomatopoeia and mimetic words, neologisms, loanwords and foreign words, and swear words. It also investigates the translation characteristics of these linguistic features from Korean to Chinese. transformative endings, widely favored by Korean youth, are actively utilized in Korean webtoons. However, Chinese is an isolating language, which lacks morphological variations, the playful use of transformative endings, in the original text cannot be fully reproduced in translation. Korean onomatopoeia and mimetic words are highly diverse, but corresponding expressions in Taiwanese Mandarin are limited. As a result, onomatopoeia and mimetic words in Taiwanese webtoons are often replaced by descriptions of the actions depicted in the visuals, using verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and idioms. With the popularity of the Korean Wave, Taiwanese audiences have embraced Korean neologisms. Consequently, the corpus collected for this study includes one-to-one Korean-Chinese translation examples. However, to ensure readers can quickly understand their meanings, translations are often rendered with explanatory notes. For loanwords and foreign words, the translations in Taiwanese webtoons reflect the prevalent use of simple English interjections in everyday conversations among Taiwanese people. Lastly, Korean webtoons frequently use swear words, which are crucial for storytelling and character development. However, translations of swear words in Taiwanese webtoons tend to tone down their intensity, inevitably creating discrepancies in the narrative compared to the original text. |
