The study employs a qualitative self-narrative research method, with the researcher as the instrument. The study has two objectives: (1) Through self-narrative research, the researcher aims to retrospect their life experiences, explore underlying thematic contexts, and gain a renewed perspective on their beliefs, attitudes, and values. (2) It seeks to investigate the impact of the academic discipline of Applied Science of Living (ASL) on various aspects of the researcher's life. Consequently, this study poses two questions: (1) How did I become who I am today? (2) What kind of learning and influence has studying ASL had on me?
The self-narrative study follows Lieblich’s (1998) “whole-content” analysis framework to begin writing, integrating the researcher’s entire life history into a cohesive narrative and then focusing on key changes in his journey. Regarding career decisions, it explores the impact of significant events and incidental occurrences on his career. It then delves into “category-content” analysis, using specific themes and content to enrich the narrative study. As part of the rigorous review process, a professional counseling psychologist was invited to review the narrative content with the researcher. The review was not merely to ensure the stability of the output text but also to provide a professional perspective on the researcher’s self-reflection and narrative. The counseling psychologist’s insights and feedback were invaluable in enhancing the quality and depth of the study.
Before encountering the Department of Applied Science of Living, the researcher’s family experience was generally positive. However, in terms of learning, past experiences resulted in lower self-confidence and self-identity. The researcher’s academic achievements were unremarkable, and life was tumultuous after leaving vocational school. However, a newfound passion for teaching emerged, acquiring teaching qualifications despite encountering obstacles. The knowledge gained from the Department of Applied Science of Living profoundly impacted his career and family, enabling the confident application of scientific principles to enhance teaching methods and significantly improve student outcomes. Sixteen years later, the researcher decided to return to the Department of Applied Science of Living for the Master’s program, acknowledging the profound positive impact the department had on my life. Engaging in rich and substantive courses and exchanging ideas with classmates from diverse backgrounds, the researcher confidently realized that ASL has the potential to transform life, elevating it to a higher level.
Upon reflecting on past events, the researcher has gained clarity on the circumstances, thoughts, and feelings. The researcher entered the Department of Applied Science of Living due to a lack of information. The researcher is now confident that the department can enhance its course promotional methods. Furthermore, the researcher strongly recommends strengthening collaboration with other resources and improving communication between advisors and students. Lastly, the researcher wishes to assert the importance of tracking the career paths of graduates for the benefit of prospective students and society as a whole.
