This study explores the representation of the "MeToo movement" in Taiwanese society, particularly how news and social media construct and interpret issues related to "sexual crimes" and "sexual harassment." The research analyzes 14,547 news articles and 7,196 social media posts from the two months following the outbreak of the "MeToo movement" in 2023, using the Public Opinion Database and corpus-assisted discourse analysis. The aim is to examine the differences in discourse between news and social media and the roles they play in the MeToo movement.
The results show that news reports mainly focus on sexual harassment incidents in the "entertainment industry" and "political realm," emphasizing legal regulations and social reactions, thereby constructing a legal framework and punitive mechanism for sexual harassment. On the other hand, social media tends to focus more on the victims' situations, criticizing structural social problems and institutional flaws, and using "collective discourse" to attempt to establish new social values, emphasizing gender equality and support for victims.
From the four-discourse framework proposed by Leifermann, it can be observed that on the personal discourse level, news texts center around individual cases, with victims often becoming the core of the story. In contrast, personal-level discourse in social media is more implicit, with a greater focus on changing the overall social structure and values. In terms of systemic discourse, news focuses on the abuse of power and the inadequacy of legal regulations, while social media further discusses institutional deficiencies and the invisible social pressures, calling for government reforms and more resources to support victims. Regarding gender equality and the legal framework, news discussions rarely address gender inequality, whereas social media strongly criticizes gender inequality under the patriarchal system. In terms of legal technical discourse, news focuses on the revision of legal regulations, while social media emphasizes not only legal amendments but also education and preventive measures. |
