This study examines the escalating global environmental challenges and the burgeoning significance of religious institutions in fostering social responsibility and sustainable development. Specifically, it delves into the strategies employed by Yiguandao’s "Fa Yi Chong De" to advance vegetarianism as a means of carbon reduction and its broader engagements in social responsibility. Utilizing qualitative research methodologies such as literature review, participant observation, and in-depth interviews, the research centers on carbon reduction practices through vegetarianism at the Taipei Tao Society of Fa Yi Chong De. Furthermore, the study conducts a comparative analysis with other religious social enterprises, such as Bliss Wisdom’s Leezen Social Enterprise and Jing Si Hall of the Buddhist Tzu Chi Charity Foundation.
The findings illustrate that Fa Yi Chong De employs a variety of strategies to promote vegetarianism for carbon reduction, encompassing advocacy, educational initiatives, organizational systems establishment, mobilization efforts, development of low-carbon living environments, and collaborations with external entities. These initiatives not only effectively mitigate carbon emissions but also foster heightened public awareness regarding environmental issues and promote a wider acceptance of vegetarian lifestyles. Furthermore, the social enterprise model of Fa Yi Chong De offers fresh insights into the sustainable development of the vegetarian industry.
Our research indicates that Fa Yi Chong De’s strategy for vegetarian carbon reduction aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal SDG13, highlighting the pivotal role of religious organizations in addressing climate change. Critical success factors include leveraging academic influence, deepening community-based advocacy models, integrating organizational strengths, enhancing talent development, and establishing a distinctive vegetarian brand.
The study recommends continuous optimization of promotion strategies for Fa Yi Chong De, such as bolstering media outreach, innovating event designs, promoting vegetarian cooking education, strengthening collaborations with government and educational institutions, and refining the social enterprise model. Additionally, the study proposes expanding research across other tao societies to comprehensively assess the benefits of vegetarian carbon reduction, explore the integration of religious doctrines with environmental stewardship, and examine the eco-friendly transformation of religious venues.
This research offers novel insights and empirical evidence on the involvement of religious organizations in environmental protection and sustainable development, such as by illustrating the effective fusion of religious beliefs, social entrepreneurship, and environmental initiatives, thus providing valuable lessons for advancing vegetarian carbon reduction and sustainable practices. Moreover, the study advocates for an active role of religious groups in addressing global environmental challenges, thereby contributing to societal sustainability.
Future research directions should encompass broadening the research scope, conducting deeper impact assessments, exploring the symbiosis between religion and ecology, evaluating the long-term societal implications of vegetarian carbon reduction, and comparing environmental strategies among religious groups across diverse cultural contexts. In sum, this study offers novel perspectives and empirical evidence at the intersection of religious organizations, social enterprises, and environmental conservation, enriching our understanding of the unique contributions and potential of religious organizations in advancing environmental protection and sustainable social development.
