Employing a narrative approach, this study aims to make a self-retrospection and self-reflection through a review of the researcher’s own experiences of growing up in a poverty-stricken environment. The researcher has continuously been changing her views on past hardships in her journey over nearly 60 years. The stages include being optimistic and cheerful; feeling helpless and inferior to others; letting go; embracing a grateful attitude; and finally, aiming to compose herself and give back to society. This study is a genuine manifestation of an individual’s resilience.
The researcher has experienced prolonged toxic stress from poverty, which has had a severe impact on her physical and mental health. Nevertheless, her optimism, religious faith, family support, physical exercise, peer relationships, and the assistance of kind-hearted individuals have all served as the sources of motivation for her recovery. The researcher realized that “happiness comes from one’s own efforts,” and she is grateful for her enduring resilience. While life can present new challenges at any moment, her past experiences of facing hardships have prepared her to adapt quickly and be ready to accept new challenges.
