During the Ming and Qing dynasties, local histories recorded various women's deeds,
focusing on individuals who significantly influenced their communities. These
accounts reflect societal expectations of women and the prevailing moral values of
those times. By examining the depictions of women in these local histories, we gain
insights into the lives and moral perceptions of women in specific regions. This
analysis helps us understand how women were perceived and the roles they were
expected to fulfill in their historical and cultural contexts.
During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions, including
Hangzhou, were significant in economy and culture. The local history of Hangzhou,
rich in content since the Song Dynasty, holds substantial historiographical value. This
study compares various local historical records to deeply analyze women's portrayal,
categorizing and summarizing their roles and impacts in Hangzhou's local history.
Mainly, these records depict women as exemplars of martyrdom, filial piety, and
motherhood. However, they also recognize women as economic and social pillars
within the family, presenting a complex and profound female image. This reflects
their vital societal contributions and influence. In a culture dominated by traditional
chastity concepts, these narratives manage to recognize and document the lives of
independent women, revealing their resilience and strength. This nuanced portrayal
significantly shapes our understanding of women's historical and contemporary roles.
