French contrast training (FCT) combines complex training and plyometric training. In years past, FCT was mainly used for the lower body. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the immediate effects of FCT on the explosive power of the upper body in rugby players. Methods: Twelve rugby players were recruited to participate in this research. The experiment involves bench press, performing 1 reception at 85% of 1RM with 3 ballistic push-ups (BPU), followed by 3-5 foam bench presses (about 50% of body weight) with 3-5 explosive push-ups (using elastic rope). The repeated measure ANOVA was adopted to analyze the phenomenon of power of the upper body. The significant difference level was set at α = .05. Results: The height of the push-up showed significantly higher at post-3, 7, and 12 minutes than a post-1 minute (p < .05). Conclusion: The intervention of FCT in warm-up may effectively improve the power performance of the upper body.
