Water, omnipresent in nature, carries with it a myriad of characteristics and symbolic interpretations. It has been an enduring source of inspiration for countless writers and artists from antiquity to the modern era, who express their emotions, thoughts, and ideas through the versatile imagery of water, thereby infusing their works with depth and richness. The exploration of water motifs in literature and art is vast, but this thesis narrows down the scope to the musical representation of water imagery in dizi compositions. Specifically, it investigates two water-themed dizi pieces –“Confluence”by Yu Xunfa and “Lianyun”by Ren Zhong. The research methodology includes literature review, interviews, and an analytical and interpretive study of the musical compositions.
This thesis is structured as follows: Chapter One outlines the research objectives, reviews the relevant literature, and articulates the research methodology. Chapter Two delves into the historical intertwining of water with arts and literature, and explores the connection between water and music. Chapters Three and Four offer a detailed account of the biographies and creative histories of the two composers, and provide an analysis of the compositional techniques and performance interpretations of the two works. Chapter Five juxtaposes the strategies employed by the two composers in crafting the musical imageryof water in their compositions. Finally, Chapter Six encapsulates the objectives and findings of this study.
This research enhances our understanding of how water is represented in music, thus empowering artists to interpret the natural allure of water with an enriched imagination in performance.
