Feeding wildlife can enhance tourists' satisfaction and potentially benefit animal conservation. However, in the case of Taiwan macaques in Tiansiang Recreation Area of Taroko national park in Taiwan, incidents of close encounters between the macaques and humans occurred frequently. Apart from causing safety issues for tourists, these inci-dents also have negative impacts on the macaques. This study assumes that the ap-proaching behavior of macaques to humans might be used for tourism promotion. Through referring to domestic and international cases of feeding wild animals, the aims of this study is to define an operational mode for feeding wild Taiwan macaques in the context of tourism, attempting to promote tourism development while considering wild-life conservation goals at the same time.
This study focuses on tourists' perception of Taiwan macaques and their attitudes towards the conservation of these macaques in the Tiansiang area of Taroko national park. We define an operational model for feeding wild macaques in tourism and seeks to ex-plore tourists' willingness to participate in this concept. The study adopts the model pro-posed by Engel, Blackwell, and Miniard (1986) as the basis for examining the relation-ship between cognitive attitude and behavioral intention.
The primary research method used in this study is a questionnaire survey. A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed, with 389 valid responses. The average scores of all research variables have a positive tendency, and some demographic variables show significant differences across different research variables. All research hypotheses in this study are supported and demonstrate significant effects. Both the perception of Taiwan macaques and the conservation attitude towards them are positively correlated with the willingness to participate in feeding activities during tourism. The results of this study indicate that feeding wild animals in tourism is not entirely infeasible and provide further evidence for the relationship among theoretical foundations. Management authorities may consider implementing this measure to promote tourism and conserve wildlife.
