In recent years, the phenomenon of declining birthrate is no stranger, and schools at all levels are facing the pressure of enrollment. Several research has been dedicated to the campus environment, but relatively few address the surrounding environment. This study will explore the influence of the service facilities around the university and the living environment of the university through the land use patterns, with a focus on the needs of college students, discussing the relationship between the service facilities around the university and the living environment of the university, and whether the service facilities around the university affect students' choice for further studies.
Through online questionnaires, we investigated the demand of college students for service facilities around universities and whether it affects their choice of further studies. Six universities “Chinese Culture University, National Changhua University of Education, Providence University, Fu Jen University, Tamkang University and Feng Chia University” are selected as the research field and scope through sampling. This study adopted Buffering Analysis, using the service radius of 5-10 minutes walking distance of each university, and the 500-meter radius of the main entrance of the campus to discuss the needs of college students for the university living environment, as well as the relationship between living environment around the university and the choice of further studies
The results of this study showed that convenience and functionality are the main demands of university students regarding living environments. The top reality demand for land use around the university is transportation, followed by commercial, residential, mixed residential and government agencies. The first ideal demand is “food” in the commercial land use category, followed by transportation "bus" in the land use transportation category, and then “student suite” in the residential category. Overall, regarding university students’ demands of living environments in both reality and ideal, convenience and functionality around the university are the major demands due to living habits. This study audaciously proposes to divide the campus area of universities, integrate universities into the surrounding neighborhoods, facilitate urban development, and meet the needs of university students for university living environment. |
