Frédéric Chopin(1810-1849)and Franz Liszt(1811-1886)were both well-known composers in the Romantic era of the nineteenth century. They were good at composing for the piano, and their piano music has been very popular to this day. Chopin was the first composer to write Ballade for the piano as instrumental music, and the creation of Liszt’s Ballades was influenced by Chopin. Chopin’s Ballade No. 2 in F major Op. 38 and Liszt’s Ballade No. 2 in B minor S. 171, discussed in this thesis, are both full of narrative poetry and dramatic tension and are masterpieces of Ballades.. In order to have a deeper understanding of the composer’s creative ideas, and the connotation and style of the works, the outline of the author’s research is as follows: Chapter 1 is an introduction, which explains the research motivation and purpose, research scope, research methods and steps; Chapter 2 discusses the development of ballades history; Chapter 3 studies Chopin’s Ballade No. 2 in F major Op. 38, which includes the composer’s life, his musical style, the creative background, the analysis and interpretation of the work; Chapter 4 studies Liszt’s Ballade No. 2 in B minor S. 171, which includes the composer’s life, his musical style, the creative background, the analysis and interpretation of the work; Chapter 5 is a conclusion. It is hoped that this research will offer the best experience and interpretation for the author when playing these Ballades by Chopin and Liszt.
