The purpose of this study is to research the career development process of adult perfectionists, explore the experience of adult perfectionist career development process from a broad career perspective, and the influence of perfectionism on career development. This study adopts the phenomenological method of qualitative research. Two participants aged 25 to 40 were invited to conduct three semi-structured interviews by means of purposive sampling. The research results are as follows:
The career development process of adult perfectionists can be divided into four stages, from "forming perfectionism" to "continuing to show perfectionist traits" in life, after encountering "stimulation of accidental events" in the course of career development, and then promoting participants "reshaped perfectionism" to achieve a balance between realistic and ideal standards. The impact of perfectionism on career development includes high standards of self-demand, to achieve excellent performance and admiration from others; struggling to move forward and finding new exits; excessive demands on oneself lead to negative emotions and imbalances; partner relationships are affected; need to take a lot of time; have to do it themself to achieve the standard and difficult to trust others; inability to tolerate imperfection and giving up or escaping.
Finally, based on the results of this study, this study provides suggestions for perfectionists and those who work with perfectionists. Suggests directions and considerations for future perfectionism-related research. It is hoped that this study will enrich the information and content of the career development process of adult perfectionists.
