Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) composed countless works during his lifetime, including 32 piano sonatas and bridging the Classical and Romantic styles. His sonatas and Johann Sebastian Bach’s (1685-1750) Well-Tempered Clavier have been hailed as “the New Testament” and “the Old Testament” of piano literature, respectively, demonstrating their artistic value and lofty status. This thesis, taking Beethoven’s Piano Sonata Op. 22 as the research topic, comprises five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, which explains the motivation and methodology of the study. The second chapter elaborates on the composition background; through a summarization of the stages of Beethoven’s compositional style and an exploration of his historical background, the characteristics of his style during the first stage are studied, and the composition background of the work is introduced. The third and fourth chapters provide an analysis of the composition of the work and an interpretation of its performance, respectively. In the two chapters, each section addresses a single movement. Section 5 is the conclusion, presenting the key conclusions and insights of the study.
