According to a survey conducted by the Election Research Centre of the National Chengchi University, in recent years, the "Taiwanese identity" of the people in Taiwan has been rising rapidly, while the double identity of both Taiwanese and Chinese and the single identity of Chinese have been declining significantly. This trend in public opinion poses a serious challenge to the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, and tests the determination and wisdom of the other side of the Taiwan Strait in handling cross-strait relations. Despite the shift in the national identity of the people in Taiwan towards "Taiwanese", mainland China has so far not abandoned its general policy of "peaceful reunification" and still hopes to further promote cross-strait integration by strengthening economic and cultural exchanges to foster spiritual ties between the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Due to the common and deep origins of blood and culture between Taiwan and the Southern part of Fujian, one way to achieve our aim of promoting cultural identity is to cultivate a sense of "both sides of the strait being one family" through cultural exchange activities participating by the younger generation in Taiwan.
The aim of this thesis is to adopt an empirical research approach, through focus group interviews, to find out whether the experiential communication in the Southern Fujian have really enhanced the understanding of the cultural ties between Taiwan and Southern Fujian among the young Taiwanese who have participated in the activities, and thus raised the cultural identity of ”both sides of the strait being one family”. The research findings also provide suggestions for cultural exchange measures between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.
The findings of this thesis suggest that it is advisable to increase the frequency of experiential communication activities when formulating future cross-strait exchange-related policies or when cross-strait exchanges are led by the people of both sides of the Taiwan Strait, as this would be conducive to enhancing the friendly understanding between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, as well as constructing a basic understanding and identity of Southern Fujian culture across the Taiwan Strait. Creating an environment conducive to cultural exchange is a path that should be strengthened to promote cross-strait exchanges.
