The Ruan, also called Qin Pipa, is a Chinese plucked string instrument invented during the Qing and Han dynasty. This instrument flourished in the Tang dynasty then declined in the Ming—most of the musical scores and relevant information are not well-preserved. Fortunately, with the efforts of a group of educators, composers and instrumental reformers, many Ruan solos come into being—Ji-liang Lin play a significant role in it. Lin not only teaches many performers but also creates lots of Ruan songs: “A River of Red,” “Grassland Memories,” “Stone Forest Nocturne,” “Play on Mount Tai,” and “Walking on a Mountain” are the well-known ones, which are the must-learn for Zhongruan players. “Stone Forest Nocturne,” “Play on Mount Tai” and “A River of Red” are three songs of different styles. They seem to be easy to play, but in fact, they are difficult, thought-provoking and profound. Therefore, I hope to analyze these three songs in my thesis.
By collecting background information about the creations of “Stone Forest Nocturne,” “Play on Mount Tai” and “A River of Red,” and analyzing the structures of the songs, I know them better and thus do a better job when performing them.
