The prototype of the imitated Huaben (an ancient Chinese short- or medium length story) "Drumming on a Basin and Singing, Zhuangzi Proved His Ultimate Truth" originated from "Drumming on a Basin" from the Collection of Huabens, the Dan Zhe. The Dan Zhe had only the body of tales survived. Hence, during the Ming period, Feng Menglong not only polished the writing of "Drumming on a Basin," but added something new to the structure of the story, making plots more tightly related. He then, in the contemporary Huaben style, inserted a poem as prologue and another at the end of the story. All this made the story he edited publish as an imitated Huaben, widely circulated and read. Moreover, Feng had strengthened the structure and plots of the story in his own view, and his thought was clearly demonstrated in his prologue and ending poem. Feng Menglong, Jin Ronghua, and Zhang Yiwei had expressed their views of the story "Drumming on a Basin and Singing, Zhuangzi Proved His Ultimate Truth," and this paper intends to analyze the similarities and differences of their views.
