This study has included 445 participants, who were men singles in National Table Tennis Championships 2019. The study aimed to investigate (1) the distribution of common sports injuries, (2) the causes of sports injuries in male table tennis players, (3) the optimal ways to take care of the acute injuries and the follow-up conditions, and (4) the relationships between sports injuries and training time, and between sports injuries and sleeping time in male table tennis athletes. All data, including the details of sports injuries, was collected via questionnaires. The statistics were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, utilizing SPSS for Windows 18.0. There were few major findings. (1) The injury rate during training was 86.8% among athletes recruited in this study. Shoulder was the most commonly injured location (36.5%) and muscle strain was the most common injury type (53.8%). (2) Insufficient warm-up was the most common cause to sports injuries (35.8%). (3) Among our study sample, most of the athletes received ice pack or hot pack as first-aid treatment immediately after injuries (50.3%). The athletes were most likely to seek care from athletic trainers (37.1%). However, 79.6% of athletes did not continue the therapy, and many athletes had recurrent injury in the same location for more than three times (29.9%). (4) None of total training years, training days per week, training hours per day, or sleeping time per day was correlated to injury time, injury locations, or injury types (p > 0.05). In conclusion, we found that shoulder, waist, and knee were the most common locations for sports injuries in table tennis athletes and the relatively high recurring rate was noticed. In the future, the coaches should pay more attention on the recovery process of injuries. The injured areas need proper treatment and strengthening in order to avoid recurrent injury and to prevent further injuries. |
