This thesis aims to discuss the evolution of the mother-daughter relationship with the novice counselor’s talk with her daughter through art practices. The main methodology in this thesis is qualitative research which involves and includes art as a medium of expression and presentation. These art practices (completed either by the daughter alone or a mutual collaboration with the mother) help shape the daughter’s daily life reflection and allows the novice counsellor to comprehend how her daughter relates life with art. Through the observation period, participant observation and narrative analysis are highly required. These observations were conducted twice a week, fifty minutes per session, with a total number of fifteen art practices during a two-month long observation period. The research approach focuses on the daughter’s spontaneous artwork. Themes, records, feedbacks, and reflections of these artistic drawings are fully discussed and supervised by the observer and her peer. The research result is thus collected and organized.
The result shows that artistic creation is beneficial to the child’s self-expression: learning why and how the mood changes accordingly, uplifting self-esteem and the willingness to try. Not only does it prompt the possibility of self-awareness and venting the child’s emotions, but it also increases tolerance to frustration. Consequently, artistic creation help build a safer and more positive mother-daughter relationship. This thesis concludes with suggestions for families with preschoolers or workers from related fields.
