The purpose of this study was to investigate the professional development of moral and civic education teachers in private secondary schools. The professional development of teachers is an important cornerstone for the promotion of quality teaching. Facing the ever-changing society, not only students need to constantly learning new knowledge, teachers also need to continuously develop their personal professionalism. Due to its unique colonial background, Macau has a weak citizenship and social participation. The civic education before 1999 mainly focused on the cultivation of moral character. Although after the turnover, the Macau SAR government gradually pays attention to civic education, however, it focus on the spirit of "loving the motherland and loving Macao". There is insufficient support in developing professional civic education teaching team and lack of comprehensive planning for their professional development.
From the past paper, there were very few studies to discuss the professional development needs of moral and civic education teachers. After “Curriculum Framework for Formal Education of Local Education System” and “The Requirements of Basic Academic Attainments of Local Education System” implemented, private secondary schools set up moral and civic education as an independent subject. From laws to textbooks, everything is ready. This study will be reviewed through historical documents, literature reviews, comparative methods and in-depth interviews in order to carrying out research to try to understand the current professional development of the moral and civic subjects of private schools in Macau and provide suggestions for the entire subject.
As a conclusion, the study results serve as references for the moral and civics education teachers, the private secondary schools, the educational administrative organizations and the future academic research.
