The purpose of this study was to study the factors of counseling master students’ incomplete professional identity construction, and their career transition path, to provide a guide of the author’s career transition path. Narrative inquiry was adopted in this study. Through depth interviews of the career transition paths and experience of the 3 research participators and the author himself, the author wrote their life stories and conducted analysis and interpretation simultaneously to understand the factors that affected incomplete counseling career identity construction and the career transition paths of these counseling identity construction incomplete masters.
There were two findings in this research. The first part revealed that the professional counseling identity construction incomplete masters all experienced the below path in their career transition paths: “Motivation of devotion,” “The challenges and frustration while studying professional knowledge that leads to the intention of changing career path,” and “After changing the career path.” If the subject could discover and cope with the career changing intention when it emerged, it is possible that the subject could devote to the counseling expertise again. Otherwise, the subject could enter the stage of “After changing the career path.” The second part was that, the factors which affected incomplete counseling professional identity construction included: (a) Having excessive expectation of counseling expertise that resulted in disillusion, (b) Frustration at learning professional knowledge, (c) Unsuccessful self-development and self-healing, or even self-estrangement, (d) Being aware of self-worth and did not maintain the persistence of counseling job, (e) The influence of not being supported or being hindered by significant others.
Through the career transition experience of the participators and the author himself, the author expected that the study could offer a reference or guide when evaluating career development, to assist the counseling master students who are hesitating about their career, and open the space and possibilities of thoughts.
