This paper makes a research on the historical origin. It starts from the exposition of "Shi" theory in the Art of War, then draws parallels from inference and probes into the "Ding Shi" theory of Tai Chi, based on which it observes and analyzes the implication, genre, characteristics and purport of The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons. Ding Shi to demonstrate the "Ding Shi" theory of Liu Xie. It is characterized by the consistency of genre and style, natural purport, standard style and flexibility. The style shall be determined in the light of the genre throughout the essay. Comparing these three elements, their connotations are similar. The Art of War and the theory of Tai Chi discuss "Shi", and "Ding Shi" means defending against the enemy. Nevertheless, Liu Xie applies it in literary criticism. On one side of the spectrum, he discusses the literary style, and emphasizes that literary form is the basis of literary style, and the literary style such as virtuality and actuality, rise and fall, pros and cons, rigidity and flexibility and recurrence, which are changeful and volatile. On the other side of the spectrum, he discusses the stylistic tendency, which has their own literary grace and can be regarded as the basis for creation and criticism. The literary style shall be based on and adhere to the purport, and gather various styles so that the essays are not scattered and incoherent. The author resorts to the combination of cross-disciplinary expositions, and expects it will be conducive to the main idea of "Ding Shi", the relation between Ding and Shi, as well as the obviousness of the purport of The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons, and determining the importance of the literary theory "Ding Shi" and its important status in various Chinese literary theories. |
