This paper suggests that humor is a natural part of the language teacher's pedagogical technique, and it therefore offers for analysis the hypothesis that language instructors use a greater amount of humor in their teaching than do their colleagues who teach subject courses. The tendency toward humor and other affinity seeking behaviors is due largely to the unique psychological demands that must be dealt with when one is learning a foreign tongue, and the need for teachers to eliminate stress from the classroom before serious language acquisition can take place. To Prove the hypothesis, this paper examines responses from four survey questions asked of sophomores from a variety of language conversation classrooms at the Chinese Culture University. The results demonstrate student perceptions that language instructors do indeed use more humor in their classes than subject teachers. This finding points to the intrinsic value of using humor as a key to stress reduction and affinity building in the language acquisition classroom.
