(Splitting Off From The Past)和自我蛻變(Self-Transformation)--描繪出米蘭達如何從懵懵無知的小女孩進入了神秘的成人世界、如何從浪漫虛幻的過去走到真實的現在、如何從排斥、逃避的人生態度轉為正視人生的積極態度。
Katherine Anne Porter's fiction can be classified as a feminine bilungsroman. The great majority of her central characters are women. Porter writes about their positions or identities in the contemporary world. She expresses female experiences and perceptions authentically. In the Miranda stories "The Old Order," "Old Mortality," and "Pale Horse, Pale Rider," Porter creates an autobiographical protagonist, named Miranda, whose background is roughly parallel to Porter's-grown up in the South, reared by father and paternal grandmother, married in adolescence and divorced years later. It is no wonder Porter can give a subtle and profound presentation of Miranda's rite of passage-from romantic dream and exploration in childhood through puzzlement and revolt in adolescence to self-quest in youth. Both Porter and Miranda are subtle in mind, observant, and self-developing. Miranda's growing up/down is K. A. Porter's herself and also a microcosm of contemporary women in the modern world. This paper is exploring Porter's Miranda stories as a female bildungsroman by using Annis Pratt's Feminine Archetypal Approach. According to Pratt, women's cocial development can be chronologically classified into the following Periods: the initiation of self, enclosure in the patriarchy and the transformation of self. And the feminine archetypal patterns-the Green-World archetype, Splitting off from the Past, and Self-transformation pattern-parallel to Miranda's growth progress from ignorance to knowledge, from the illusory romanticism of the past to the real, solid present, from rejection to acceptance. Miranda completes the ritual initiation into the mysterious adulthood.
