China and Japan, not merely of the same origin in race and of one family in language, also shared buddhist faith in ancient times. As far back as in Liang and Cheng Dynastie (502-587 A. D.) Buddhism began to spread from our nation to Japan, flourishing there for more than one thousand years, throughout out Tang, Sung, Yuan,Ming,Ching Dynasties.During Tang Dynasty ( under the House of Li ), when the power of our nation reached its climax,Buddhist culture also developed and prevailed tremendously. From then on, Japanese Buddhist monks continuously came to our country to solicit Buddhist scriptures and learn its doctrines. The two Sung Dynasites marked a turning point in the history of Sino-Japanese relationship. What distinguishes the relations in this period from those in the others is that no official ties existed between the two nations, but commercial transactions in civil levels dominated the relations. With the booming of this international trade, associations of Buddhist monks between the two nations were also promoted. At that time, when Zen doctrines reached the climatic stage of development,Japanese monks came over to China under the Sung Dynasty primarily for learning these doctrines. The Zen culture persisting till now around kamakura area was contributed by the devoted propagation of its doctrines by the Japanese monks once studying in China. No less noticeable were the efforts of the same nature by Chinese monks sailing over to Japan. Not only did they bring essential elements of Chinese culture of the Sung Dynasty into Japanese culture (especially the great influence they had on the inspiration of the samurai spirit and the formation of samurai culture), but, from then on, the various aspects of Japanese culture and society have been extensively and deeply influenced.such as art forms, samurai code, tea-drinking ceremony, etc; none of these are not the embodi-ments of Zen way of thinking. It is beyond doubt that Zendoctrines once produced massive impace on both Chinese and Japanese cultures.
