This paper is an attempt to study the commonly used English transition words by reviewing the previous research done on this subject, reclassifying those transition words into fifteen categories according to the types of logical relation-ships existing between sentences in a paragraph or piece of writing:(1)addition, (2)emphasis, (3)option, (4)exposition, (5)exemplification, (6) transition, (7) these disc similarity, (8) contrast, (9) contradiction, (10) concession, (11) reformulation, (12) consequence, (13) condition, (14)enumeration, (15)summation, and discussing the meaning and usage of each transition word in detail. Two important findings are obtained in the process of analysis:(1)A few transition words can indicate different kinds of logical relationship in different contexts. (2)Transition words in the same category often differ from each other in both meaning and usage. To those with an intention to master English transition words, overies should be both significant and valuable.
