This study wanted to classify aroma-sweetness-spicy characteristics of Cinnamomum osmophloeum Kanehiraclonal trees at Hwa-Lin Ecological Garden. Mr. Da-Wei Hu, ex-chairman of Forestry Department, Chinese Culture University, collected 130 trees overall Taiwan by cutting method during years of 1982~1984. However, their basic information was lost as he passed away. Related data bank needs to be re-established. This preliminary study used 19 randomly selected clonal trees from C. osmophloeumKanehira plantation zone A at Hwa-Lin Ecological Garden. To avoid personally subjective judgment, each tree was tested by 7 staff members, and each staff member used 7 leaves to classify aroma-sweetness-spicy characteristics of each tree. A tree was classified as specific characteristic by at least 4 staff members and at least 4 leaves with specific characteristic by each staff member. The results showed: 1) From number of tree, 9 non-aroma trees were a little lesser than 10 aroma ones; 15 non-sweet trees was significant more than 4 sweet ones; and no spicy tree was found. 2) No. (and ratio)of aroma-sweet, aroma-non-sweet, and non-aroma-non-sweet tree were 4 (21.05%), 6 (31.58%) and 9 (47.37%), respectively. Chi-square value (X^2) was 4.5600 and its probability was 0.0327. Significant differences were found among those characteristic classifications. 3) Aroma trees showed tendency of taller height with smaller DBH but significant lower main stem No. and forked ratio than non-aroma ones; sweet trees showed significant shorter height and smaller DBH but tendency of smaller main stem No. and forked ratio than non-sweet ones. Aroma-non-sweet trees were very significantly tallest in height and larger DBH, and showed tendency of lower main stem No. and forked ratio; aroma-sweet trees shorter height and smaller DBH, non-aroma-non-sweet trees tendency of larger main stem No. and larger forked ratio. Therefore, aroma-sweetness-spicy characteristic classification can be used to establish related data bank of C. osmophloeumKanehiraclonal trees at Hwa-Lin Ecological Garden.
