In Schemata of Humanity, Liu Ji-Shan delved into the depth of “human nature” and “falsehood.” In addition to the shared concern for the theory of human nature in the tradition of Confucianism, he offered some practical methods to detect and regulate one’s desire and elucidated the origin of “falsehood.” Liu Ji-Shan was specifically known for his emphasis upon “Du Ti”; a subject, disoriented from the “Yi” and thereby dissociated from “Du Ti,” would have thoughts leading to all kinds of falsehood. In this project, I intend to study the ideas of trivial deviation and “wang” to illustrate the exquisite “gong fu” exemplified in Ji-Shan’s Schemata of Humanity and highlight his incisive insight of “the purity of morality.”
