There are two typical viewpoints referring to Hobbes' religious theory. One regards it as irrelevant to his political theory. Among this camp Quentin Skinner's DE FACTO theory is the prominent one. The other takes religion the foundation of Hobbes' political thought. A. P. Martinich asserts God plays some essential role in Hobbes' ethical system and S. A. Lloyd contends it is 'transcendent interests' rather than self-preservationthat Hobbes argues for. These two kinds of interpretation excludes politics from religion in Hobbes' theory. In this research play a compatible standpoint will be proposed.
