Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) and his 32 piano sonatas have an unique position in the history of piano composition, and are among the most common tracks that many pianists will come into contact with as they learn. This thesis takes Beethoven's Piano Sonata Op. 57 "Appassionata" as the research theme, divided into five sections. The first chapter is the introduction, describing the research motivation, purpose, scope, and method. The second chapter discusses the creative background of the sonata, sorting out Beethoven’s staging method prior to its piano sonatas. This chapter also covers the characteristics of the piano sonatas as related to the second period of Beethoven’s sonatas according to the staging method proposed by W. V. Lenz (1809-1883). The third chapter contains a musical analysis of the sonata. The fourth chapter discusses the piece’s performance interpretation. In the final chapter, conclusions are made concerning the creative background of the piece, as well as the musical analysis, and the performance interpretation.
