Abstract: Recently, the Chinese Communist Party announced a new population policy that enables each couple have a second child in order to achieve balance in low birth rate situation. This paper examined the fertility choice of Chinese women under two-child policy and factors affecting their fertility decision.
Based on previous literatures, women fertility behavior was influenced by six major factors including economic resources, intergenerational aspects, women empowerment, sex preference, gendered division in domestic work and lifetime intention. These factors were categorized into two conditions: internal and external, and they were also applied for the economic model of fertility of Gary S. Becker (1960) and life course approach of Norman N. Ryder (1965).
A list of question with 5-point-range scale was set in order to collect respondent’s answer on fertility-related problems. The data was analyzed by running Statistical Package for Social Science 20 (SPSS). This research used the Descriptive Statistic Analysis for the first analysis step, then used Reliability Test to check the variable measurement. Finally, using Regression model to check the correlation between dependent and independent variables.
This study showed the evidence from previous studies that two-child policy considered not to have influence in women fertility intention to have more child. Factor has the most significant effect on Chinese women fertility intention is economic resources.
