Claude Debussy was influenced in his early phase by romantic composers such has Gabriel Fauré and Emmanuel Chabrier, and traits of romanticism can often be found in his works. There are many piano compositions with a smaller scale from this period. One of them is Claude Debussy’s Suite bergamasque, being one of his most significant works in his early years.
This paper focuses on Suite bergamasque, discussing its work and history. It then introduces the origin of the titles ‘Prelude’, ‘Menuet’ and ’Passepied’, followed by discussing the poems that influenced the creation of ‘Clair de lune’. Furthermore, this paper analyzes and interprets these four pieces respectively. The interpretation, in addition to providing the viewpoints of the author, also references Debussy Remembered (edited by Roger Nichols) and recordings of pianists Walter Gieseking and Pascal Rogé to further complete and enrich the paper.
