The suona concerto "Farewell my Concubine" is a commissioned work created in 1989 by the Central Conservatory Chinese Orchestra (CCCO) based on a renowned Chinese historical story of the same name. The melody is a unique combination of Chinese and Western music, with inspirations from the quintessence of "Peking Opera" elements merged with Western classical music, creating a fusion of contemporary music with the spirit of traditional art. The "Song of a Traveling Son" suona concerto, commissioned by ZhongHua Chinese Orchestra and suona performer Tzu-You Lin in 2010, is based on a poem of the same name written by Meng Jiao in the anthology "Three Hundred Tang Poems". The theme of this piece is centered on maternal love, praising the timeless motherly love through a traveling son's grateful heart. The whole performance demonstrates great bravura, and in addition, paints a blissful picture of coziness and warmth for the audience.
With brief music background analysis, the author will discuss in the article about the "Peking Opera" elements instrumented in the "Farewell my Concubine" concerto. Then, from various perspectives, such as history, music theory, culture implications, etc., the author will explore the various techniques and elements used in the creations of "Farewell my Concubine" and "Song of a Traveling Son", to help performers and audiences to fully appreciate the essence of these pieces, their roles in passing down the cultural heritage, and then further discover the dynamics and richness of their artistic value and cultural content.
