Abstract:	The aim of this article is to describe the principles of message design for illustrations. There are five sessions to this article. First, the significance of illustrations is explained. Seconds, the five functions identified by Levin, Anglin, & Carney (1987) are introduced. They are decoration, representation, organization, interpretation, and transformation. Third, the principles of message design for each of the five functions of illustrations are elaborated. Fourth, the functions of color in illustrations are discussed. Finally, some analysis is provided.
