Judo combats involve fierce attack and defense movements such as throws, hold-downs, pinning and strangleholds, which are apt to cause sports injuries. Research results revealed there has been lack of Chinese medicine intervention to judo matches in the past. The present study investigates the Chinese medicine treatments of injured competitors, as well as medical satisfaction of coaches and competitors of 2008 National Judo Championship, with 1837 competitors and coaches in 2008 Judo Championship as survey objects. The statistics of the study demonstrates the injury rates of upper limbs of judo competitors are significantly higher than those of the lower extremities, as shoulder injuries occur frequently. In addition, sprain injuries account for the highest percentage of injuries caused during judo practice, followed by contusions and strain injuries. This result indicates contusions, strain injuries and shoulder injuries are injury types that require most attention. As to the medical seeking behavior, Chinese medicine is the first choice of medication for competitors (61.7%) during daily practice, followed by traditional western medicine (36.17%), though no distinct preference exists between traditional western medicine (40.9%) and Chinese medicine (36.36%) among coaches. Furthermore, the degree of medical satisfaction reached 85% regarding the Chinese medical physicians’ diagnosis and explanation of treatments, as well as injury relief the recovery rates. The introduction, promotion, and wide application of Chinese medicine to the treatments of sports injures is therefore strongly recommended.
