Abstract: The primary purpose of this study is to develop a submaximal field test for estimation of VO2max using 3-minute side step test. A second purpose is to determine the accuracy of the 800m walk/run test in estimating VO2max. Subjects (N=60) were male primary school children with average age, hight, and weight of 11.0±0.6 yrs, 142.2±7.5cm, and 38.4±10.9Kg, respectively. A board (1 meter long, 2.5cmhight, and 10cm width) is used for side step test, frequency of this test is 50 beats/min. After exercise, the observer measure peak heart rate (HR0) and recovery heart rate (1'00”~1'30” HR1, 2'00”~2'30” HR2, 3'00”~3'30” HR3).
    The results revealed that:
    1.The VO2max is significantly correlated with peak heart rate, recovery heart rate (HR1, HR2, HR3), and fitness index during 3-minute side step test (r=-.38; r=-.46; r=-.43; r=-.35; r=.49, p<.05).
    2.The VO2max is significantly correlated with 800m walk/run test (r=-.81, p<.05).
