Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was a highly accomplished French composer of 20th century. Although his compositions include ballets, choral, solo piano works, and operas, only two strings music were completed throughout his lifetime: his Cello Sonata and Violin Sonata. The thesis will focus on Poulenc’s Sonata for cello and piano.
The first chapter aims at the motive of the research. Important influences on Poulenc’s musical style are analyzed in Chapter 2, based on his background factors: Lex Six and Neoclassicism; followed by his motive of composing Cello Sonata. Chapter 3 addresses his compositional technique and its distinctive features.
The last two chapters will provide both the listener and the performer with a more informed and nuanced understanding of this work and Poulenc’s musical style as a whole.
