The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between muscular fitness and 5000 m running performance. The subjects were eighteen healthy males with well endurance training, with the average age, height and weight of 20.43±1.47 years (mean ± SD), 173.3±5.5 cm and 66.8±5.3 kg respectively. All subjects underwent strength and power test. The strength and muscle power of each subject was measured by Cybex 6000 isokinetic machine. 5000 meter performance was performed on an outdoor 400 m track. The relationships between strength, muscle power and 5000 m running performance were evaluated using Pearson's product-moment correlation. As the result, strength and muscle revealed significantly correlated with 5000 m running performance (r=-.512, -.689), and after body weight correction, strength and muscle power were higher significantly correlated with 5000 m running performance (r= -.596, -.751). In conclusion, for better performance, endurance athletes are encouraged to include strength and muscle power conditioning in addition to daily endurance training.
