Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare whether respiratory muscle warm-up can enhance performance in cycling.
Methods: Ten activity males (age 24.70±1.42 yrs; height: 174.10±3.51 cm; weight: 75.40±9.17 kg) were recruited to participate the experiment. By counter-balanced design, all subjects used aero position to complete two incremental load tests with and without respiratory warm-up on different days. Warm up in fast inhaling and slow exhaling manner was employed for respiratory muscle by which training device increases valve pressure to induce resistance to the respiratory muscle when inhaling. During tests, we observed physiological responses at 150W, 200W, exhaustion and time to exhaustion as performance index.
Results: There were no significant differences in V(superscript ‧) E, ventilation frequency, V(superscript ‧) O2, HR, perception of dyspnea and exhaustion time between 2 visits at 3 intensities.
Conclusions: The expiratory muscle warm-up does not provide obvious effect on physiological responses and exhaustion time in cycling.
