As the concept of cultural preservation is becoming more and more popular, there is an increasing number of invaluable historic sites and architecture are preserved. A wide variety of techniques of restoration and revival are used nationwide. Especially, for places with rich cultural history such as Dihua Street, the number of cultural heritage sites and the potential for business development make the trend of cultural revival and reuse unstoppable. As a result, over the past ten years, the interior design and the usage of many traditional buildings at Dihua Street have changed dramatically while the exterior remains the same. From the usage of the buildings per se to the atmosphere of the entire street block, the change has brought a new life to Dihua Street; however, different usages of the buildings and the divergent attitudes from different generations have also caused several conflicts. In such a context, the development of Dihua Street has gone from the south street, where the development has gradually been saturated, to the north street.
This thesis starts from the perspective of the behavioral research, aiming to combine Pattern Languages with Space Syntax, two widely-used analysis methods in the field of environmental and behavioral research and space research, to review the development of Dihua Street. Comparison analysis is conducted with a case study of traditional buildings that are renovated in south of Dihua street. With all the result comes together, we got six new patterns , respectively : Regional arcade entrance space , Does not prevent the penetration of counter space , Atrium with connectivity , Long space for sale setting , Seating space in long, narrow space , Different from the main entrance of the back door , the strategies of these patterns that can be utilized in the future building renovation design . |
