Traditionally some secular interpretation holds that religion does not play any crucial part in Thomas Hobbes’s philosophy. However, some religious interpretation contends it does. Arguing from the similar philosophical basis, Quentin Skinner as a secular interpreter and Aloysius Martinich as a religious one developed their theories contrary to each other. This project introduces an approach of the sociology of scientific knowledge to evaluate both interpretations. By examining the interplay between religion and science in the 17th century England, the relation between the two parts was coherent rather than antagonistic. This will lead to the conclusion that the religious interpretation of Hobbes is more plausible.
