The urban flora determines the structure and quality of urban habitats and forms the foundation for urban biodiversity. Recent developments in urban landscape ecology have highlighted the importance of fine-scaled heterogeneity in urban environments. However, such developments have focused more on the built environments and the finer-scaled heterogeneity in urban natural or semi-natural environments are yet to be studied. This three-year study proposes to study plant diversity as a means to analyzing the fine-scaled heterogeneity in urban natural environments. In the process, we will also review the appropriateness of using plant survey methods originally developed for natural areas in such highly human modified areas, and propose amendments for application in urban environments. Through the identification of finer-scaled plant-determined patch types, we will proceed to study the drivers of plant diversity in urban environments. Research questions include: 1) What kind of information is missed by using aerial-photograph-based patch delineation as the basis for survey plot arrangement in urban greenspaces? 2) How does spatial heterogeneity differ between highly human arranged spaces versus natural areas, and how should survey methods originally developed for natural areas be modified in urban areas? 3) How does the accumulation of area-species curves differ among different types of greenspaces and green patches? 4) How does diversity partitioning differ among different types of greenspaces, green patches, and seasons? From this, what can we derive about the drivers of urban plant diversity?
