在全球化的背景下，都市內的社會、經濟等活動提升，促使大量人口往都市內部移入，舊有的都市空間，無法繼續承載這些人類的活動，不得不持續向都市的邊緣擴張，使得都市空間型態開始產生變化。
本研究旨在探求都市發展變遷的驅動現象，人類隨著都市發展及時空背景的不同，需求也不斷隨之改變，都市空間型態也隨著發展變遷產生變化，而變化背後之驅動現象，更是本研究最為關注之重點。因此本研究提出「都市發展變遷理論」，盼能找出台北市的都市發展變遷之驅動現象。
本研究分做兩階段研究，在研究過程中，圖資、史料與「都市發展變遷理論」的交叉論述，用以解釋都市發展變遷的原因及歷程。第一階段研究為都市活動核心區位及空間型態變遷的趨勢，以便瞭解都市的外貌與內部之變化。第二階段研究為都市驅動現象研究，運用靜態的「城」與動態的「市」之概念篩選都市驅動因素，並以主成分分析的簡化數據及降維特性，找出數據集內變異數貢獻最大的特徵，進而訂出最主要的驅動現象。
研究結果發現，都市發展變遷對空間產生變化，由日治時代經濟發展的追求，基礎建設發展為主要驅動；1946年戰後台北市發展初期，人口大量遷入產生眾多都市問題，直到美援建設經濟發展才漸趨恢復，雖然此時驅動還是為基礎建設與經濟發展，但也開始對於都市環境開始監測，都市活動核心扇形向外擴張發展。最後藉著大型公共建設使得都市發展近趨飽和，基礎設施持續建設，國民經濟發達且環境意識抬頭等成為了此時期的驅動現象。
依據研究結果本研究盼能給予未來都市規劃方向及意見。未來的台北市如何繼續在國際化大都市的舞台上站穩腳步，如何與世界其他國際大都市競爭，找尋下一個驅動台北市發展的力量就是關鍵所在。
Under the globalization, a considerable amount of population has been driven to immigrate to the cities by the increasing social and economic activities. However, the original urban space has to be expanded to the margin areas to further satisfy the requirement from the additional immigration, changing the spatial morphology of the urban.
This paper aims at exloring the driving force of the urban development and changes. Human requirements change as urban develops and backgrounds differs. And so do to the urban spatial patterns. The driving force behind these changes just are the focus of this researach. Therefore, the theory of urban development and change is proposed to anticipate to find out the driving force of urban development and change in Taipei city.
Two stages are involved in this paper. The cross validation betweeen historical data and materials and the thoery of urban development and change are applied to explain the reseaons and courses of urban development and change. The first stage focuses on the key location of urban activity and trend of spatial morphology change with the aim to apprehend the internal and external changes of the urban during each period. The driving force of urban is the research of the second stage. Urban driven factors are generated using dynamic “city” and static “market”. The simplified data and dimension reduction of principal components are analyzed to simplify the characteristics of data set and get the most contibuted variance to further conclude the main driven phenomenon.
From the result it’s indicated that the urban development and change calls for the spatial change. To fulfill the infrastructure construction development during Japan-reigned period, infrastructure construction served as the main activities. Then, after the war in 1946, in early days of Taipei's development, a large number of people immigrated into the city, causing many problems, which were gradually restored due to the economic development until the America-aided construction. Although the driven factor was economic construction, monitor of urban environment also were began. The core of urabn activites was quickly expanded outward in fan-shaped morphology. Large public construction indicated the saturation of urban development. Continuable construction of infrastructure , national economic development as well as environmental conciousness have become the driving force of this period in Taipei City.
This research is anticipated to provide direction and suggestion for urban planning, which should attach importance to that how Taipei City leads the role worldwide, compete with other international cities and seek out the next driven factor for the development of Taipei City.
